Cape Verde Inter-Island Flights and Ferries

The easiest forms of transport between the islands are by plane and boat. Plane travel is by far the quickest and easiest method with an average flight time between islands being appx 1hr. The boat can take much longer but is the cheaper method. Below we will look at the effects of inter island travel within each of the cape verde islands.

Boa Vista

Until the international airport eventually opens - perhaps in 2008 - this will be hard to reach. There are daily flights from Sal at different times of day. Tourists must spend a night in Sal. They can be heavily overbooked for weeks ahead depending on the time of year and the ATR72s cannot fly when the Harmattan blows or at night. Flights can be cancelled. Booking in advance is recommended or as soon as you arrive in Sal.

Cape Verde Express offers a service to Boa Vista connecting with UK flights on Thursdays for return. But if the incoming aircraft is delayed, it may not operate, due to lack of night landing facilities. These are being omproved constantly as more people travel to the island.

Sao Nicolau

Sao Nicolau is only 40 miles away, but not easy to reach. Flights are on alternate days from Sal. If the weather is bad or a plane is unserviceable, flights are cancelled, sometimes for several days. The runway can have fierce crosswind, which makes it particularly difficult in windy conditions and vulnerable to airport closure..

Santiago and Sao Vicente

There are thrice daily flights to Praia on Santiago, and twice daily to Mindelo on Sao Vicente, from Sal. There are also flights to Praia on Santiago from Lisbon four days per week. Most Cape Verde tourist flights from London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Munich, Frankfurt and Paris still arrive at Sal. A runway extension at Sao Pedro airport in Sao Vicente will eventually permit international flights from Europe or the US to land there. The international airport is planned to open by 2009 on Sao Vicente.

There is a daily flight from Praia, early in the morning. Tourists must spend a night in Santiago outbound. It is a sensible precaution to have one night there also on the return trip. There are also day excursion flights to Fogo from Sal.

Santa Antao and Brava

Both islands have airports with short landing strips, built in the 1990s. Both are now closed and access is by ferry or cargo ship only.

Ilha de Sal International Airport (Amílcar Cabral) (SID)

A normal cost would be around 10 euros by taxi from the airport into the towns. Shared taxis (alugers) are also available. Car Rental in Sal is available.

Facilities: The airport has a Post Office, Bank, Auto Exchange Machine, Restaurants, Cafeterias, Bars, VIP lounge, Duty Free shop, Newsagent / Tobacconist, Gift shop, Travel Agent, and Tourist help desk. Departure tax: None.

Ferries in the Cape Verdes

A variety of old cargo ships, roll-on roll-off mixed passenger / freight carriers and newer catamarans serve the Cape Verde Islands as ferries. The Govenment has deregulated as the private Cape Verdean entrepreneur ship is rapidly improving Cape Verde shipping services. Many of the older ships withdrawn decades ago from the Norwegian fjords, are now being replaced by more modern, if still second-hand ships. Apparently, You cannot buy tickets in advance at the Praia harbour so you must search out the ticket agencies on the day before departure.

Fast Cats Jet Caraibe and Auto Jet

There are two modern water-jet catamarans have come from Venezuela. An old cargo ship links the islands in a northerly and southerly route patter, taking about 4 days. It costs £25 one way per trip but is uncomfortable and unreliable. The lights do not work and the toilets overflow and run out onto the companionways, The ships stop at islands en route, for a few hours, when they happen to get there. The Sotovento is out of commission and being phased out for the more modern but stil ancient ferry Janela.  The Barlovento also serve Maio on Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun.

Ro-Ro ferry Mar d`Canal

By far the best ship in the Cape Verde islands, modern, fast and reliable. It arrived from the Norway via the Canaries and operates the sort of service they are used to there between Mindelo and Porto Novo twice daily departing from Sao Vicente at 0800 and 1500 every weekday, returning at 1000 and 1700. Prices £5.

Cargo ship Ribiera de Paul

This old war horse leaves Mindelo every day bar Sunday for Porto Novo on Santa Antao at 0730, returning at 1030. It is cheap and reliable. Prices are around 3.50 euros

Trimaran for Boa Vista day trips when not u/s

Boa Vista Island can be visited on a day trip from Santa Maria pier, costing £75 for travel, lunch and a minbus tour. The 30 mile voyage takes three hours each way and leaves at 0700 on a trimaran.
