The Cape Verde Islands are the ideal getaway all year round with very attractive sunshine temperatures and stunning beaches to keep you going back for more every year. We even have amazing cape verde property for sale. The group of 10 Islands lie off the West African Coast. Cape Verde was a former Portuguese colony and the influence of Portugal is still evident in the cultural mix of everyday life that you will experience on your Cape Verde holidays. Despite having been blighted by drought over the last century, Cape Verde has gradually developed a flourishing tourist industry. Sao Vicente is definately one of Cape Verdes most beautiful islands and well worth a visit. You can also find a variety of accomodation on Cape Verde that will suit your needs.

'The 10 Islands and five islets of Cape Verde are the archetypal tropical paradise, with white sand beaches, turquoise water and great diving.' Conde Nast Brides (Autumn/Winter 2006)

Cape Verde holidays are very popular with surfers and windsurfers due to the trade winds on some of the islands that create some excellent surfing conditions. The island of Sal in particular has a glowing reputation among the surfing fraternity that have already discovered the attractions of holidays in Cape Verde. Sal and Boa Vista can be quite windy at certain times of the year however, the Baia Das Gatas on the island of Sao Vicente offers an amazing shelter form the wind for the true sun lovers. The international Airport at the moment is on Sal and lies close to the main tourist area of Santa Maria. The island is blessed with stretches of long white sand beaches. International Airports will soon be opening on Boa Vista and Sao Vicente.

Relax on the White Sand Beaches of the Cape Verde Islands. A ferry system links the Cape Verde islands together and provides the opportunity to see even more of the amazing volcanic terrain and the unique sights of each island. Enjoy a range of watersports, or simply relax on the sun-drenched beaches. One type of cuisine that you will likely encounter on Cape Verde holidays will be the tasty fish dishes that draw influence from the distinctive Portuguese and African elements of the islands.

Cape Verde is also known for its distinctive musical style called Morna, which expresses emotion in a similar way to Portuguese Fado music and gives visitors the opportunity to connect with the culture of the islands in venues where it is performed. Cape Verde holidays are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a relaxing and unique island holiday experience away from the more developed tourist destinations. One of the real attractions is that you need no innoculations to go and there are virtually no mosquitos anywhere. See our health and vaccinations section.

With cold ocean currents that keep temperatures surprisingly mild, Cape Verde is pleasant year-round. Even during the so-called rainy season from mid-August to mid-October, weeks can go by without a downpour. Many come during the festive Carnival season in February/March. If you visit in winter you may need a sweater - especially at higher altitudes - although average daily minimums never fall far below 20°C (68°F). Things do get a little stickier in the southern islands (especially Fogo ) during summer.

Getting Around

There's a network of expensive internal flights between all inhabited islands except Brava ; between Praia, Mindelo and Sal there are flights at least once daily. Cash is the only certain method of payment at TACV offices. There are also regular ferry services between islands, though schedules can be unpredictable. Polar runs most of these.

It's only really worth hiring a car on Santiago , Boa Vista and Fogo; Alucar is the largest local operator. You'll need an international licence and should ask for a 4WD. Public transport on the islands is by aluguers, minibuses or trucks that collect passengers at unmarked stops (ask a local) and drop them wherever they like along the route. Taxis are generally cheap and plentiful in major towns, but expeditions further afield will cost you.

If you enjoy fine beaches, beautiful scenery, vibrant cultures and have a sense of adventure Cape Verde will not disappoint.
