Cape Verde Communications

There are Broadband internet connections on Sal, Santiago, San Vicente and Boa Vista, not yet on Maio. There are also ISDN lines in Praia.

CV Telecom mobile cards cost about 25 euros including calls. They need to be topped up every 4 months or they stop working. Credit lasts 2 months. It is very expensive to make international calls out of Cape Verde via phone phone cards. However, there are small telephone cafes that call via the internet which makes the calls considerably cheaper. There is a phone cafe opposite the restaurant Pica Pia in Sao Vicente. Skype is being used more as the broadband networks improve.

Some mobiles work in Cape Verde, but are expensive to accept and make calls. Orange does not work very often. The reception across the islands for CV Telecom is pretty good in most places. You can buy CV Telecom phone cards for approximately 5 to use in the public phones.

Business communications

Most business correspondence is conducted in English. The country code is +238. The outgoing code is 0 followed by your relevant country code. City codes are not required. The archipelago's main cities can be reached by International Direct Dialling. A GSM 900/1800 mobile network is in operation throughout the islands; coverage is good in most towns. Internet is available in the main towns and major hotels offer laptop connections.
