SANTO ANTAO - Island features...

Santo Antão (Portuguese for "Saint Anthony"), or Sontonton in Cape Verdean Creole, is the western most and largest of the Barlavento islands of Cape Verde. The nearest main island is Sao Vicente to the southeast, separated by a channel named Canal de São Vicente. It is the western most large island in Cape Verde and the continent of Africa, and the second largest in Cape Verde. The island, entirely made up of volcanic material, was discovered in 1462 by Diogo Afonso, but was not given its current name until around the 1500s. Santo Antao has some of the best plant and animal life within the Cape Verde island group.First inhabited in 1548, it is divided into north and south by a mountain range long considered impenetrable but now crossed by a road. The island's main town is Ribeira Grande on the north coast, home to an airport, while its ferry port is Porto Novo on the south coast. A part of the island in the southeast has an arid climate, while the northwest receives relatively normal precipitation. Its valleys are suffering heavy erosion. Many of its volcanoes are young, especially its calderas. Its mountains are composed of basalt.

The tallest mountain is Topo de Coroa, reaching a height of 1,979 m. The second tallest is Pico da Cruz at 1,585 m.

In the 17th century, people from the nearby islands of Santiago and Fogo along with people from northern Portugal arrived in today's Vila da Ribeira Grande in the northern part of the island. Later, wine and coffee became the most important exports on the island.

Santo Antao is probably known as the wettest Island with lots of greenery displayed making the Island more colourful compared to the other Islands. Of course it's still hot however can be more humid.

Tourist Information

Fishing and paper production are the main industries on the island. The main sources of agriculture are sugar cane, yams, cassava, bananas, mangoes, and grain, as well as fishing. The main product on the island is a kind of rum and is known as grogue. Tourism is becoming one of the most dominant industries on the island. The island is the most touristic island in Cape Verde. The island is very pretty and people are very polite and are well-educated. Bathing and fishing are in the area of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo.

Santo Antao is truly stunning and spectaclar. A huge mountain range exceeds 1500m splits the island in two. In the valleys it is very fertile but around the coast it is baron and rugged. Getting there is easy; there are some flights available to the island but these are not very frequent. The most popular way of reaching the island is by taking a 1 hour ferry ride from Mindelo on the neighbouring island of Sao Vicente. The Capital and Main Port is Port town of Porto Novo and the island provides excellent hiking. A visit to see the rock at Janela would be great, you will see the inscriptions that date back to the 1400's before the Portuguese arrived on the islands. The island is also famous for it's Rum, nice for some!

Santo Antao is a beautiful lush green island with rugged peaks and deep valleys and is the second largest island in the archipelago. Many people are attracted to the islands for its hiking, particularly the Ribeiras. For those who prefer the less energetic option, you can still appreciate the stunning views with spectacular drives along coastal roads which provide access to the ravines and gorges that nurture the most impressive lush vegetation.

A day trip to Santo Antao will allow you to traverse the island and see some of the spectacular scenery. The drive from Porto Novo in the south across the mountain range to Ribeira Grande in the NorthEast is an awe inspiring trip with spectacular views, although the precarious road clinging to the mountainside is not for everyone. Landscapes quickly change from being bare and arid to mountains, which as the road twists and turns, gives breathtaking views of verdant valleys with villages appearing in deep valleys and high into the cliffs.

Visitors to Santo Antao must visit the village of Fontainhas, perched on the edge of a rock above a deep ribeira. The houses in this unique village line the street and have a sheer drop of several hundred metres behind them! Don't forget to take your camera.
